UAE Winter Holiday Guide: Where to Go October to February from Dubai (2025–2026)

October to February is the UAE’s finest travel season — and the most underutilised by residents who don’t realise how many destinations open up when the UAE itself becomes the world’s most perfect climate. The irony is real: while the rest of the world is escaping summer heat by visiting UAE, UAE residents in the same months have extraordinary travel options that summer visitors never see.

This guide covers the best holiday destinations from the UAE during the winter months — October, November, December, January, and February — with specific guidance on what’s in season, what’s not, and why each month has its own distinct set of options.

Why UAE Winter Is the Best Time to Travel

The UAE winter climate (October–February) creates several travel advantages:

  • Indian Ocean destinations (Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Thailand) are at their peak dry season conditions — clear water, calm seas, no monsoon
  • East African safaris (Kenya, Tanzania) are in peak wildlife season — the Maasai Mara continues to have strong wildlife through November, and the calving season begins in January
  • Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Bali) is in dry season — the best weather of the year
  • The Middle East neighbourhood (Jordan, Egypt, Morocco) is at its most pleasant — temperatures that would be brutal in summer are ideal for sightseeing
  • Oman (Salalah excepted — Khareef is summer) is excellent November–March
  • Sri Lanka’s south coast opens up from November
  • Europe offers Christmas atmosphere in December, and January–February deliver value that peak summer travellers never see

What UAE residents don’t often consider: winter in the UAE means summer elsewhere is finished — the crowds at European, Moroccan, and Jordanian sites have gone, prices are lower, and the same destinations feel completely different.

October: Still Summer in Europe, Excellent Everywhere Else

Why October is Underrated

October is one of the UAE’s finest travel months for several reasons:

  • UAE summer is definitively over — the psychological shift to travel mode happens
  • Most European destinations are in shoulder season — crowds lower than September, prices below summer
  • Indian Ocean dry season is returning in earnest
  • The Maasai Mara is still excellent for wildlife (Migration has wound down but predator activity remains high)

Top October Destinations from UAE

Japan (autumn foliage): October brings Japan’s second great seasonal spectacle — maple trees turning vivid red and gold across temple gardens. Less crowded than cherry blossom season and equally beautiful. Tokyo and Kyoto in October are extraordinary.

Italy (harvest season): October is Tuscany’s vendemmia (grape harvest) — vineyards being picked, the Chianti roads golden with autumn leaves, and temperatures perfect for exploring Rome and the Amalfi Coast. Significantly fewer tourists than summer.

Morocco: October is one of Morocco’s finest months — Marrakech and Fes at 25–30°C (warm but not brutal), the Atlas Mountains accessible, Sahara comfortable. The post-summer colour in the souks and medinas is extraordinary.

Maldives (low season ending): October is the tail of low season — prices are still meaningfully lower than November onwards, but conditions are improving week by week. A good month for value-conscious Maldives travel.

Kenya (post-Migration, pre-peak): October has excellent wildlife in the Mara (predators remain active after the Migration), and prices are slightly below November–January peak.

Georgia: October is one of the finest months in Tbilisi — autumn colours in the parks and hills surrounding the city, comfortable temperatures (15–22°C), and the wine harvest in Kakheti. Book the autumn wine harvest experience specifically.

November: The Indian Ocean Returns — Best Month for Beach Travel

Why November Is Outstanding

November is arguably the finest travel month from the UAE. The Indian Ocean dry season returns fully. Southeast Asia is in peak condition. East Africa has excellent wildlife. European city breaks are uncrowded and good value. And the UAE’s own perfect winter weather makes the contrast to beach destinations less dramatic — but the destinations themselves are at their finest.

Top November Destinations from UAE

Maldives: November marks the return of the dry season — and it does so more gently and affordably than the December peak rush. Clear water, calm seas, excellent visibility, and prices that haven’t yet reached Christmas levels. An excellent balance of conditions and value.

Thailand (Andaman coast): Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Phi Phi return to perfect conditions in November — the southwest monsoon has passed, seas are calm, and the water is at its clearest. One of the strongest months for the Thai Andaman coast.

Sri Lanka (south coast opens): November marks the beginning of the south coast dry season — Galle, Mirissa, and Tangalle become excellent. The whale watching season at Mirissa begins in November (blue whales present through April).

Kenya and Tanzania: November sees the short rains wind down and wildlife remaining excellent. The calving season in the southern Serengeti begins building toward December-January peak.

Seychelles (inter-monsoon): November is one of the two inter-monsoon periods (the other being April–May) when seas are calm on all islands simultaneously — making it an excellent month to visit multiple islands or to access La Digue and Praslin under ideal conditions.

Morocco: November is excellent — temperatures have dropped from October levels (22–26°C in Marrakech), rain is possible but not dominant, and the medinas are far less crowded than summer and spring.

London and European cities: November is one of the best months for European city breaks — no crowds, good prices, and by late November the Christmas decorations and markets begin. London’s Southbank Christmas market typically opens in November.

December: Peak Season — Plan for the Best Experiences

The December Reality

December is the UAE’s busiest outbound travel month. School winter break, Christmas, New Year, and the UAE National Day long weekend (1–2 December) all compress into one calendar month, creating maximum demand on every popular route and destination.

What this means:

  • Book early (September–October for Christmas week, months earlier for Maldives)
  • Budget for premium pricing at all peak destinations
  • Consider destinations that are excellent in December but less obviously so — Sri Lanka, Georgia, and Thailand are strong but less hyper-demanded than the Maldives

December Travel Highlights

National Day long weekend (1–2 December): 4-day window perfect for Georgia, Turkey, Muscat, or a Maldives resort stay. Book by October.

Christmas week (20–27 December): Maldives, London, Thailand, Mauritius, Sri Lanka. Book by September.

New Year (28 December – 3 January): Maldives, Thailand, Japan (for Oshōgatsu), London (if you can get fireworks tickets). Book months ahead.

January: Quietly the Best Month of the Year

Why January Is Underrated

January is the UAE’s best-kept travel secret. The Christmas rush has passed. School is back (or just resuming). The price spike has ended. And the destinations that were in Christmas demand are still in perfect condition.

January from UAE offers:

  • Indian Ocean dry season in full swing — Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, Sri Lanka all at their finest
  • Thailand’s finest weather (cool season: 25–28°C, low humidity)
  • Kenya’s Amboseli for the finest Kilimanjaro backdrop views and calving season beginning in Tanzania
  • Jordan (Petra, Wadi Rum) — cool but clear, no crowds, extraordinary atmosphere
  • Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Bali) — dry season

January pricing: Significantly lower than December for most destinations. A Maldives resort that costs AED 6,000/night in Christmas week may cost AED 3,500/night in mid-January. Same resort, same room, same ocean — dramatically different price.

For UAE residents with flexible annual leave: A January trip to the Maldives or Seychelles offers peak conditions at mid-season prices. One of the best travel value propositions of the entire year.

Top January Destinations from UAE

Maldives: At its absolute finest — peak dry season, maximum water clarity, and post-Christmas pricing (10–20% below Christmas rates for the same properties).

Sri Lanka: January is the prime month for the south coast (Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle) — whale watching in full swing, clear conditions, and Galle Fort in the dry winter season is at its most beautiful.

Jordan: Petra in January is one of the most atmospheric experiences in the Arab world — the ancient city without the summer crowds, possibly with morning mist in the siq, and temperatures that make the 800-step climb to the Monastery comfortable. Wadi Rum in January has cold nights (perfect for Bedouin camp stargazing) and brilliant days.

Japan: January is a quiet, excellent month for Japan travel — post-New Year rush has passed, ski season is in full swing, and the cities are uncrowded. The onsen (hot spring) experience in winter is at its most enjoyable.

Thailand: January is the finest month for Thailand — cool season across the country (25–30°C), dry, clear, and without the October pre-season heaviness. Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai all excellent.

Morocco: January is good for Marrakech and Fes (15–18°C, some rain, but uncrowded and atmospheric) and excellent for the Sahara (cold nights, brilliant days).

February: Romance Season — India Ocean and Beyond

Why February Is Popular

February is driven primarily by Valentine’s Day (14 February) — one of the most heavily booked travel windows from the UAE for couples. Beyond Valentine’s, February continues January’s excellent conditions across the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East neighbourhood.

Top February Destinations from UAE

Maldives (Valentine’s): The most popular Valentine’s destination from the UAE by significant margin. Book overwater villas for Valentine’s week by October–November — they sell out. Top properties for Valentine’s: Soneva Fushi, Anantara Veli, W Maldives.

Bali: February is in Bali’s wet season — not the finest beach conditions, but Ubud and the cultural interior are excellent (the rain is usually afternoon, leaving mornings clear). Prices are at their lowest of the year for a premium February Bali villa.

Mauritius: February can have some rain (part of the cyclone season — not cyclone-frequent, but possible) — check weather patterns before booking. When the weather is good, February Mauritius is excellent.

Seychelles: February is acceptable but can be affected by the northwest monsoon — some swell on exposed beaches. The sheltered bays (Anse Lazio, Anse Georgette) remain calm. Worth checking conditions for your specific dates.

Jordan: February is excellent for Petra and Wadi Rum — cool (10–15°C in Petra), clear, dramatic winter light, and almost entirely tourist-free. One of the finest times to experience Petra.

Portugal and Spain (Lisbon, Seville): February is the beginning of spring in Iberia — almond trees blossoming in the Algarve, mild temperatures in Lisbon (14–16°C), and no tourists whatsoever. Excellent value.

Seasonal Deals: What to Watch For

November to December transition: Many Maldives resorts drop their October/November low-season rate sharply for the first week of November — only to raise it again from around November 15 onwards as December peak approaches. The first two weeks of November often represent the best Maldives value of the year.

January post-Christmas: The week of 7–14 January sees significant price drops across all destinations that were peak in Christmas week. If your school resumes by 5–7 January and you can travel as an adult couple after drop-off, this window delivers Christmas-quality conditions at mid-season pricing.

Early February (before Valentine’s week): February 1–10 at Indian Ocean destinations is meaningfully cheaper than Valentine’s week (14 February). Identical conditions, lower rates.
